New Member Information

Murrumbeena Playgroup provides a regular meeting place for parents, carers and their pre-school children.

It is a place where children can socialise with others the same age and develop self-confidence and self-expression.  Playgroup provides children with new play experiences and gives parents and carers further play ideas for the home.  It is also a place for parents and carers to meet socially and exchange ideas.

We are a volunteer organisation run by a committee of parents.  We rely on the assistance of all members for the smooth running of playgroup.

Above all, playgroup is great fun for everyone!

We began in 1974 as a coffee group for mothers and grew rapidly into a community playgroup. In 2014 we celebrated our 40th birthday.  Each year there are approximately 60 families involved in our playgroup. In 2016 we moved to our new location at Murrumbeena Uniting Church in Murrumbeena.

Sessions are run from February to December of each year. Sessions run Monday to Thursday 9:30am to 11:30am. We are closed on public holidays and during the Christmas holiday period and remain open during school holidays.

Membership is open to families with preschool aged children and may attend as many sessions as they like within a week.

Playgroup has an annual membership fee of $120 per family with an additional $40 to be paid to Playgroup Victoria.  Members can attend as many sessions as they like.

Fees cover purchases of resources that the children use and rental of the premises. Please call Murrumbeena Playgroup’s Enrolment Officer for current membership fee information on 0432 271 204.

The playgroup has a selection of indoor toys and activities like puzzles, a kitchen and shop corner, blocks, cars, duplo, dress-ups, magnatiles, dolls and craft activities.  Outside we have a large, shaded garden with a sand pit, climbing equipment and an assortment of outdoor play toys.

Playgroup offers additional activities too. Each quarter we have incursions and undertake art and craft activities for events including cultural days, Easter, mothers and fathers day and Christmas. We have had visits from animal farms, educational shows and art and sport groups. These activities are free for members.

Tea and coffee is available in the kitchen area. We ask that children eat fruit only at playgroup as we are a strict NUT FREE zone. We ask that parents bring a piece of fruit for their children to share with the group. Please ensure you keep the kitchen area clean and tidy. There is no roster for this activity; therefore, we rely on a cooperative effort and appreciate everyone lending a hand.

We have children attending playgroup who are allergic to many things including peanuts, milk, wheat etc. We ask that no foods, other than the fruit at morning tea, be consumed on the premises and that handwashing prior to entry and after fruit time be essential.

Each session has a group leader who are responsible for opening and closing the session on that day. They are available to answer any questions you may have and let you know of any upcoming events.  All parents are expected to assist in set up and pack up of the playgroup each session.

Please note that playgroup is not a childminding facility; children must be properly supervised by their parent/carer at all times.  If a situation arises where the parent/carer is occupied elsewhere and their child requires an adult’s attention, please do not hesitate to step in.  Accidents do occur and it is important to know that there is a comprehensive first-aid kit kept in the kitchen.  A phone available is in the foyer for emergencies only.

It is the responsibility of all parents/carers to help maintain cleanliness of the premises.  At the end of each session, each parent/carer is asked to help put away all the equipment used during the session. Boxes are clearly labeled. Your group leader will assist you if you are unsure of where toys are kept.  The tables should be wiped, the floor swept/vacuumed, dishes washed and put away, and the general areas cleaned.  Outside, all equipment should be put away in the appropriate place, and the sandpit cover replaced.

As the playgroup is run by volunteers, we also ask each parent/carer to participate in at least one event during the year such as a working bee or fundraiser.

Playgroup sessions are held in the Meeting Rooms and Playground at Murrumbeena Uniting Church located at 117 Murrumbeena Road in Murrumbeena.  There is parking at the back of the hall with room for all. Playgroup members should enter the hall through the glass doors on the side of the church marked reception.

Enrolment forms are available at the playgroup. If you have any questions at all, or would like to become involved in the playgroup committee or you would like to become a group leader, please let us know. You can also email us at or visit our facebook page.
